The Istanbul Diaries #2

Shine bright like a diamond embellished pendant lamp…
Yeah! More pottery, please!
Finally a tea worth spending money on.
The big question is: a)do I have to drink it myself to become more love-able, or b) I have to make someone else drink it in order to fall in love with me?

Half of my name written on bread!
Cats, cats everywhere! (Just like the simit stands.)
Inside the Süleymaniye Mosque…

…and outside.

The most fascinating thing about turkish tea in my opinion is the fact that it is served in these delicate glasses instead of tea cups (s. in the rest of the uiverse).
Also at the Süleymaniye Mosque.

Beautiful old house at Chalki (in Turkish Heybeliada), the second largest of the Princes’ Islands in the Sea of Marmara. Unfortunately many old houses in Chalki as well as in Prinkipos (or Büyükada) are abandoned, slowly falling apart.
Thank you (to my family) for this beautiful trip and thank you (to my wonderful readers and friends).
I hope you enjoyed Istanbul for my point of view!

The Istanbul Diaries #1

Spring in Istanbul. Learning to distinguish peach from almond trees.
The Tiled Kiosk Museum consists part of the Istanbul Archaelogical Museums.
I loved all tiles and pottery I saw there beyond description.
My brother and I. Love you, silly!
Taksim Square by day…
…and by night.
The wandering never comes to an end…
Yummy Simit on the go.
Getting lost in Istanbul is kind of my hobby.

This building’s name in Greek is the Great School of The Nation, yet Wikipedia says it is known as the Phanar Greek Orthodox College (Phanar is the Greek name of the Instabul area called Fener).
It might sound funny, but it reminds me of Hogwarts. Huge and imposing.
This has to be the Dolmabahçe Palace. Unless I’m terribly mistaken.

Lost track of all the universities we saw in Istanbul.
Wait for it, there is a song that describes this photo perfectly. Para-para-paradise…

At Hagia Sophia…
Hagia Sophia is a former Orthodox church, later a mosque and now a museum.
In greek Hagia Sophia means Holly Wisdom.
All these little, beautiful details…
Bosporus. The view from the ship.
The Topkapi Palace, residence of the Ottoman sultans for more than 400 years.
If I had such a beautiful Garden I wouldn’t consider moving at all.
The occassional stranger that pops in most of my photos.

The Nutella Banana Muffins

Do you ever wake up feeling like baking Nutella Banana Muffins? No? Well, that’s what you’ve been missing!

I bake these for my little brother (he’s still at school, so he’ll find out when he comes back home), because I felt like culinary spoiling him.

I used a recipe I found in the blog The Londoner by Rosie, which is at the top of my favorites list. It’s super super easy and the best solution to make use of overripe bananas (I hate throwing food away!).

If you want to make 12 of your own Banana & Nutella Muffins you’ll need:

  • 230 grams (1 3/4 cups) self raising flour
  • 150 grams (3/4 cup) granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large free range eggs, lightly beaten
  • 113 grams (1/2 cup) melted unsalted butter
  • 3 large very ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tbsp Nutella, at room temp

Pre-heat your oven to 180C or 350F. Line your muffin tins with paper liners, or use silicone trays. In one bowl combine your flour, sugar & salt. In another combine your eggs, butter, mashed bananas & vanilla.
Tip one into the other and gently fold together.
You want your batter to be thoroughly mixed, but still lumpy and utterly hideous. (A smooth batter makes horrible banana bread, trust me.)
Divide your mixture between your cases, each one should be just about half full.
Take a teaspoon of slightly warm Nutella and pop a blob (technical term) onto the centre of each muffin. Use a cocktail stick or skewer to swirl the Nutella into the muffin without turning the whole thing chocolatey.

Have fun!

Girl Meets World: Spotted

About five years ago I became familiar with the idea of Spotted. I was reading my favorite free press Athens newspaper, LIFO, when I discovered a column called “I saw you..” Hopeless romantics, both men and women, all around Athens were sending text messages to the editorial team of the newspaper, confessing their undeniable, secret love/ crush/ lust to strangers they’ve encountered by chance in Athens.

I enjoyed reading this column ever since –some of the texts were flirty, some of them irresistibly sweet, a little silly or plainly hilarious. In the back of my mind there was always some hope that someone –incredibly handsome or with a killer sense of humor, someday would spot me as well and write a short message in order to get in touch with me. Well, I was born 40% romantic, 30% realistic and 30% optimistic, so you can’t blame me for being a full time daydreamer (it’s a hard job and someone has to do it). Unfortunately, I was never addressed through the column –or just didn’t get my hands on that particular issue?- but the Spotted column was always the first I read.

When I moved to Corfu, I didn’t expect it to have it a similar column, since there was no local newspaper or magazine and the local society is tiny compared to Athens –everybody used to know (almost) everybody. As a result, I was taken by surprise in a good way when I found a Spotted in Corfu online-page. However, I was quickly disappointed when I realized that most messages were about whether a “tall blonde with piercing blue eyes who was having fun with her girlfriends at the (insert name of fancy, really crowded club in Corfu)” or a “mysterious tall, dark, muscular guy that also hanged out at the same club.” To be honest, even though I’d seen lots of blonde women in Corfu while I lived there, I rarely encountered male specimens that looked so ravishing…

After a couple of months living in Germersheim, someone (his/her identity remains unknown. I’d literally die to know who it is!) had the extremely brilliant idea of creating a Spotted page on Facebook. What more could we –the countless, lively students brightening up the dull everyday life of this tiny city in the middle of nowhere*- possibly ask for? 50% poems, lots of humorous descriptions, cheekiness as well as the word cute repeated endless times! In addition, since we belong to a university department for foreign languages, translation and interpreting, love messages are written not only in German but also in English, Italian and Spanish. My favorite part is when the guy or girl described is recognized and pointed out by his/her friends.

A couple weeks ago I flew back to Athens where I’m going to spend my, erm, sort of spring break? Due to the dark (economically as well as socially and politically) times we are going through, press traffic has decreased radically –two important press companies shut down in 2012- and free press in now nowhere to be found. If you accidentally come across an issue, consider yourself very very lucky. However, the aforementioned newspaper may print few copies these days yet it maintains a very active site as well as a Facebook page. When my first week in Athens was over, I decided to check out the Spotted section, perfectly sure that someone might have spotted my exotic** aura flaneur-ing across the city. Big girls don’t cry, so I wasn’t disappointed at all when I found out that no one had noticed my a) inhabiting public transportation, b) having drinks at Drunk Sinatra or c) studying at Starbucks over a hot Grande Chai Latte.

Still not spotted girls?

The only thing that seemed particularly disappointing was the endless comments that accompanied the column. Endless love declarations, people literally crying out their interest in people they know really well (like a best friend), a person they meet every day (like a co-worker) or someone they’ll probably never meet again (like that girl who was making eye contact and was smiling to them at the cozy bistrotheque). They all had one thing in common: Absolutely no one had the guts to get up and do something about his/ her crush! What the hell is wrong with us, people? Why are we so shy? Why do we need to hide behind a computer screen? Exchange promising looks but never make the first step in order to get to know someone or to communicate our feelings? We need to be brave, be bold, say lame pick-up lines, get rejected, say smarter pick-up lines, then find love. When I read in this article 104 Ways to Break the Ice, it hit home instantly. Here I’m citing a few lines that –I think- second perfectly my point of view:

“See, I’ve always held the opinion that it doesn’t matter what you say, as long as you say something. The whole 99% of life is showing up thing which is I know is corny but which I also know is true. […] So when my friend told me he had nothing to say, I told him it didn’t matter. I said: just walk over there and open your mouth. Something will come out. Trust me. You won’t say nothing.”

My personal favorite is #95. Why are you wearing a sombrero? From now on I promise to be deliberately less shy –shamelessly flirty will come later- and use Spotted  only to prank friends who had it coming.

What are you waiting for?

The Athens Diaries #1

Listening to the Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs and the Black Keys and typing faster than ever before–too much coffee maybe?

Back in Athens, the city on the top of my favorites list, yet this time I don’t know how to feel. There’s lot of excitement as well as disorientation. What should I do? My staycation in my home town hasto have a goal, a purpose. I spent my first days in Athens reading to German newspapers, catching up with old friends and wishing that the weather will eventually get better (I think the grey South Germany sky is following me everywhere).
Last night I went out with a very dear friend of mine, Stella (do you remember her? She’s the one who took these photos.), and was reminded of all the reasons that I love this city so much.

Firstly, the places. There are like thousands of places where you can have coffee, drinks, naughty desserts and exotic food, party or just hang around. You can hop from one place to another; go from one place to another within minutes. And when you find yourself in areas like Psirri or Gazi, it’s all so lively. It’s like the city itself is sending off vibes, telling “I’m vibrant, I’m alive!” There is always a place that matches your mood. Just ask yourself, how do I feel today? Do I feel loud and energetic? Or do I want something cozy, warm and friendly? Am I going out with friends or my other half? Or am I going out to flirt?

Now I mentioned flirting, allow me to introduce my second point. The people. Have I been away for too long or have Athenians become slightly more handsome? In the past few days I’ve been in a constant cultural shock; every single man in this city is dark and sporting that unshaved-almost-a-beard look I love. It’s like razors have not been introduced in this city yet. Sometimes even underage guys have beards, which if you ask me is utterly confusing, since they look so much older and mature. Let’s keep it simple gentlemen: only if you’re older than 18, no 20 you’re allowed not to shave.

However, I couldn’t help but notice that people here do not dance. They talk, laugh, stand, lean against walls, stare intensively at strangers (if stares could kill, we’d all be dead by now), but dancing is a big no no, especially among men. Why? I miss all the awkward/ smooth/ sexy/ insane moves I’ve gotten used to while partying in Germersheim.

Then it’s that feeling; that state of anonymity that I’ve missed so much while I lived in Germersheim. In Athens you can be anybody, nobody or even have multiple personalities at the same time if you wish (the last is considered a psychological condition that requires medical supervision, right?). Every time I go out in Athens, the following lyrics of Mika’s Grace Kelly song echo in my mind “I could be brown/ I could be blue/ I could be violet sky/ I could be hurtful/ I could be purple/ I could be anything you like.” Of course this time I’m playing the tourist card, because as S. mentioned it sounds more intriguing. I might not be Scandinavian blonde or wearing sandals with socks, but the appeal of the whole concept doesn’t fade so easily. In addition, I’m now excused to take as many photos as I please without feeling guilty or ridiculous, not knowing the way to anywhere and therefore obliged to ask cute passengers for directions.

More details about my Athenian adventures will be coming soon.

(source)

150 γρ.

Flâneur à Baba Au Rum

I’m a proud member of the “We Hate 9 Out of Our 10 Photos” Women Club. I’m not photogenic and for every personal photo you see on my blog there are at least 5 photos I rejected in my camera. However, a couple nights ago I went out with my dear friend Stella, who is also a blogger and a marvelous photographer. We were having cocktails at Baba Au Rum (specific details at the end of the post), when she took out her camera and said “I’m going to take some photos of you”. And zapity-zapity-zap, she photographed me with true paparazzi quality.

Yesterday she sent me some photos and left me gazing in awe at them –I guess I’m a bit narcissistic, right? Anyway, I loved all the photos, but not because I looked necessarily good in them. It was because she somehow captured perfectly the cosiness of the place, my serene and lighthearted mood at that moment.
Man, you got me! I’m kind of a redhead now.
This was my first drink; I swear.
It was a pineapple cocktail, I couldn’t help it!
My left eye absents itself from the photo.
Baba Au Rum is a little, cosy cocktail bar at Kleitiou St. (can’t recall the number –sorry!) at the centre of Athens. The Athenian nights are still warm, so you can sit outside if you wish; it is located at a pedestrian zone and it’s all peace and quiet. We didn’t manage to find a table out, so we sat inside the bar, which was very nicely decorated. The catalog looks like an old pocket book, but when you open it you realize there are dozens of familiar as well as unheard-of cocktails; deciding what we were going to have was an arduous task. We opted for St. Clementine’s and Sox’s Daiquiri Au Baba, which turned to be quite tasty, if not exciting! Baba Au Rum is a little pricier than regular bars in Athens, yet it’s totally worth it. The environment is so warm and inviting, the staff polite and friendly, there’s nice music in the background and a “4 Cocktails You Have To Try Before You Die” list in the catalog, hence I’m planning my next visit!

Όπως είπε και ο ίδιος, το καλοκαίρι έφυγε μόνο αν σε παρατήσει κάποια καλοκαιρινή βραδιά η αγάπη σου ξαφνικά. Άρα το καλοκαίρι ίσως και να είναι κάπου εδώ τριγύρω;
